The Five Best Art Museums in South Floridabg
The best museums in South Florida capitalize on the city’s wonderful weather, bountiful sunshine and vibrant sense of place. To prove this point, one of the five best art museums in South Florida is best seen by golf cart. Yes, golf cart!
South Florida’s 5 Best Art Museums to See
Whether visiting South Florida or a long-time resident, you must check out these art museums.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) calls itself “the museum where new art is discovered.” Supporting both well-known artists and emerging masters, MOCA has permanent and rotating exhibits. Museum hours are Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Bass Museum of Art on Miami Beach might be small, but like many small treasures, it is a jewel. Exhibitions come and go from the Art Deco building, with itself being a real wonder to the senses. Past exhibits have included fashion, gold, startling modern masterpieces and more. The Bass has limited hours, Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
The University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum provides fans of Renaissance, Baroque, ancient, Native American and Asian art a genteel home. Visit Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
The stunning Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is the former winter home of industrialist and socialite James Deering. The Italian Renaissance and Mediterranean Revival villa houses priceless works of art and a vast European garden with natural sculptures that must be seen to be believed. The museum is open every day except Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Among South Florida museums, Wynwood Walls stands out for being, well, out! It is not really a typical art museum, but a neighborhood of warehouse walls, beautifully turned into murals by renowned and local artists. The best way to appreciate Wynwood Walls is to take a golf cart tour (See? We told you about that golf cart!).
If you want to sneak in a couple of other great Miami finds, consider the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the mysterious oddity Coral Castle, which are considered to be part installation art, part folk art and part sculpture garden.
